With the series Graphic MSP, creator Maurício de Sousa revisited his classic characters with the contemporary outlooks of new artists, who then told stories under different perspectives. Jeremias - who was created in 1960 and is the first black character of the group – had never led his own story. Created in the 1960s by Maurício de Sousa, the series of comic stories influenced generations of children in Brazil and around 40 other countries, having been translated into 14 languages. Stick to the original stuff, it's timeless.Excerpt from Jeremias – Pele, used with the author's permission.“I exist and I want people to see me as I am.” The phrase, uttered with a firm voice, is that of Jeremias, a black boy and a character of the Brazilian comic Turma da Mônica (Monica’s Gang). the comics are still being made although peyo has died and the quality of the stories is appalling. it is the kind of show that never goes out of date. Yes, there are morals to the stories sometimes but they are never really the in you face kind of morals you find in current cartoons or Disney movies. The coexisting was more an idea of peace and harmony than it was about communism. But i can assure there was no antisemitism or KKK or even communist intentions. ![]() There is one book that deals with a language issue (should a blowpipe be called blowsmurf or smurfpipe?) that is a parody on the language issues that still exist in Belgium. Peyo, the creator of the comics and series did sometimes get his inspiration from current events. they had wonderful adventures but never the gooey type like the Carebears. Yes they were cute, adorable and their personalities just drew you into the stories. As a Belgian girl i grew up with these and there has never been anything that could remotely match this. It is surprising that there are no Belgian comments on this series. I used to wake my lil sister up and we would clumsily poor ourselves whatever breakfast cereal mom would be able to get us that week and me and Angie would sit down to catch The Smurfs on our Saturday mornings.the smurfs was aired so damn early back then but as kids waiting all week for what used to be Saturday morning cartoons we didn't care.and the smurfs was one we had no problem waking up for!! As i now watch it as a grown man finding it in my store on DVD i am so surprised that outta all these reviews (which i'm surprised not more of with all us 80's kids out here) how the hell has none commented on the immense amount of adult innuendos involved within this series? Really guys? I am a frequent visitor of IMDb and i see people commenting on same type of things with other shows/film that I literally have to go back and look to find what it is the reviewers are talking about. The Smurfs however is a series that doesn't even try to hide it lol.albeit it is an absolutely amazing series back when morals mattered.and they were trying to teach us kids something good.I only now watching the series after all these years recognise the adult content slipped in.lol.that was probably only thrown in there from the creators as a nod to the hardcore parents that actually got up back then with there urse then again if that was the case why the hell were Saturday Morning Cartoons created in the 1st place? hahahaha!!!.Definitely check it out.I know its released on DVD.at least volume 1 and 2 of the first season." ohhh I hate doing reviews" lol.(lil shout out to Cranky Smurf there).:) Love ya sis.hope ya read this and remember those Saturday mornings.which I pretty sure u will.:) This is and will always be one of my favorites. It's a great toon and it's too bad they don't release these on VHS or DVD. I guess I thought this show must have been cancelled around 1986 or 1987, because I remember I stopped watching this show at that time when I was around 11 years old. I always wondered why this series has so many fans so much younger then me, and finding out that "The Smurfs" ran into 1990 explains that part. No wonder this show has so many fans that are a lot younger then me. I'm really surprised to find out that this series ran through the entire '80s and even into 1990. My older sister who was 11 at the time watched it with me with just as much passion and awe. Wow I feel old because I actually remember watching the very FIRST episode of Smurfs as it originally aired in 1981. ![]() ![]() Waking up at 6 in the morning to see these toons was a treat that kids in the '80s will always remember. And it was probably the best made Saturday morning toon of the '80s. The difference here is that Smurfs was a Saturday morning toon, opposed to being an after school weekday toon like the others. Joe and Transformers, this cartoon was pure '80s. This is one of the more famous cartoons of the '80s.
